Research Interests

My research interests concern the assessment of exploited fisheries, and the development of new models and field methods to conserve fishery resources.  Abundance estimation in data limited circumstances has been the concern of my dissertation work.  Of specific interest are: invertebrate species like lobster, which are difficult (if not impossible, currently) to age, and anadromous populations of shad, which require individual assessment by river, but whose abundance is unknown until they return to their natal rivers to spawn in their third or fourth year.  The long-term consequences of fisheries exploitation are of particular interest to me, especially the potential for size-selective fishery pressure to cause evolution in exploited populations.  Of critical importance to management are the effects of fisheries-selection on long-term yield, and the capacity for recovery in stocks that have been overexploited for decades.
