THE BOW-MOUNTED PUSHNET

Schematic diagram of a pushnet from Kriete & Loesch (Trans. Amer. Fish Soc., 109:649-652, 1980).

The bow-mounted pushnet was designed in 1977 by Dr. Joseph Loesch and William Kriete, Jr. of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to sample juvenile alewife, American shad and blueback herring. This device provided a more efficient means of sampling pelagic juvenile fishes. Below are some historical photos of the pushnet early in it's development.
